Course Information
This course along with others is delivered in partnership with Mairi Nye Associates. The COSCA certificate in counselling skills has been long established. This generic counselling skills is aimed at students who wish to become more effective and competent in using a counselling approach.
This course:-
- Provides a COSCA certificated 120 hour training programme in counselling skills, delivered over 4 modules of 30 hours.
- Contains four strands: skills, knowledge, self-awareness and ethics.
- Uses experimental learning e.g students practice skills in groups of three.
- Is mainly designed for people in the caring professions.
- Helps the individuals who complete it to develop and apply counselling skills on non-counselling settings.
- Gives a professionally recognised in counselling skills.
- Provides an excellent starting point for those who wish to train as a counsellor or psychotherapist.
Students will develop
- Good interpersonal and communication skills.
- Active listening using verbal and non-verbal skills e.g paraphrasing, asking questions in a helpful way, summarising, attending and responding to the speaker.
- Inserting the qualities of acceptance, genuineness and empathy in a helping relationship.

The course will start each day at 9.30am (with tea and coffee available from 9.00am) and will end at 4.30pm. There will be a three quarter of an hour lunch break (please bring a packed lunch or you can use the nearby take away shops) and two 15 minute tea/coffee breaks.
Cost: £295 per module (payable 1 week before each module starts)

Mairi Nye Associates is an organisational member of COSCA and Mairi is a COSCA accredited trainer. She has many years experience of working in the drug and alcohol field and has delivered training for both public & private sector organisations. Mairi holds a Certificate of Qualification in Social Work and an Advance Diploma in Counselling and is a practicing counsellor and supervisor. She adheres to the COSCA Statement of Ethics and Code of Practice.
