Course Introduction

This course is new for 2010 and marks the combination of two of our key areas of expertise - providing professionally accredited training and counselling through Simpson House Counselling that works with people affected by substance use. The COSCA Certificate in Counselling Skills: Substance Use and Dependency has been developed from the long established generic counselling skills course.

This course:-

  • Provides a COSCA certificate 144 hour training programme in counselling skills, delivered over 4 modules of 36 hours.
  • Contains four strands: skills, knowledge, self-awareness and ethics.
  • Uses experimental learning e.g. students practice skills in groups of three.
  • Is mainly designed for people in helping or caring professions with the specialist focus on substance use and dependency.
  • Helps the individuals who complete it to develop and apply counselling skills in non-counselling settings.
  • Gives a professionally recognised qualification in counselling skills.

Students will develop

  • Good interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Active listening using verbal and non-verbal skills e.g paraphrasing, asking questions in a helpful way, summarising, attending and responding to the speaker.
  • Inserting the qualities of acceptance, genuineness and empathy into a helping relationship.

  Course Dates:

This course is taught mostly on Thursdays from 1.30 til 8.30pm. There are also occasional Fridays - 9.30 til 4.30pm. The dates for Modules 1 and 2 are as follow. The dates for Modules 3 and 4 will be available shortly.
