COSCA Certificate in Counselling Skills:
Substance Use & Dependence

Starts Thursday 24 May 2012

Course Introduction

This brings together the combination of two of our key areas of expertise - providing professionally accredited training and counselling people affected by substance use. The COSCA Certificate in Counselling Skills: Substance Use and Dependence has been developed from the long established generic counselling skills course.

This course:

  • Provides a COSCA certificate 144 hour training programme in counselling skills, delivered over 4 modules of 36 hours.
  • Contains four strands: skills, knowledge, self-awareness and ethics.
  • Uses experimental learning e.g. students practice skills in groups of three.
  • Is mainly designed for people in helping or caring professions with the specialist focus on substance use and dependency.
  • Helps the individuals who complete it to develop and apply counselling skills in non-counselling settings.
  • Gives a professionally recognised qualification in counselling skills.

Students will develop

  • Good interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Active listening using verbal and non-verbal skills e.g paraphrasing, asking questions in a helpful way, summarising, attending and responding to the speaker.
  • Inserting the qualities of acceptance, genuineness and empathy into a helping relationship.

Tutor: Sarah Loeb

As well as counselling clients at Simpson House, I also manage the placement counsellors who work with the service.  I am a BACP Accredited Counsellor (MBACP Accred) and have been counselling people affected by drug use since 2000.  My work as a trainer facilitating the COSCA Certificate in Counselling Skills for Substance Use & Dependency compliments my practice, supervision & management role.

I am qualified as a counselling supervisor, and have experience of conducting research including studies on post natal depression and the impact of counselling drug users on low incomes.

My counselling approach is Integrative, based on a belief that we all have capacity to make meaning of our existence. I integrate theories of Psychodynamic, CBT, Gestalt and Person Centred counselling using Personal Construct Psychology (PCP).

Before counselling I worked as a trainer, sexual health worker and with homeless people. As well as my Postgraduate Diploma in Counselling, I have a degree in Psychology and a Postgraduate qualification in Community Education.

Students Comments:

"This course was very beneficial for my personal development. I felt I knew myself well before this course but I have learnt so much about myself by applying the theories learnt on the course to my life. I'd recommend this course to anyone wanting to improve their practice at work and have a fresh insight into substance use and themselves."

"I embarked on this course hoping it would develop my listening skills in working with clients with addictions. It exceeded my expectations; challenging my core beliefs and values, changing how I work from the inside out. I have learnt a lot of new counselling theories and information about drug use but the surprising part has been the amount of self-awareness that has come through being on this course."

"I really enjoyed learning in different ways; good teaching, creative experiences, reflective learning, group work and lots of skills practise. I know I do a better job of listening to my clients because of being on this course."
